Woohoo! We're in the World Cup again! We secured our spot after.... losing? Soccer is weird, man. Don't get me wrong, I know how the scoring system works and the fact that we made it in on goal differential, but getting in after a 2-0 loss to Costa Rica isn't all that great.
Nothing against Costa Rica, but they've never done anything in the Cup, much like we haven't. If we want to be taken seriously on the national stage we need to start beating teams like Costa Rica because we're expected to. They have one player on their roster, Keylor Navas, who plays in a high end league with PSG. And the French league isn't all that great by European standards. We have Christian Pulisic on Chelsea, Zack Steffen on Man City, Antonee Robinson on Fulham, and Giovanni Reyna on Borussia Dortmund. We should be better than Costa Rica based solely on that.
*Quick note: I'm not ashamed to admit I had to look up our roster to see where our players were playing.
We're the United States, the land of, "if you ain't first, you're last." We should be aiming to dog walk these teams up and down the field for 90+ minutes. I'm glad we're back in the World Cup, but we had better hope for a favorable draw if we want to get out of group play. If we don't, I fully expect this from Taylor Twellman again:
At least now I have a reason to learn more about our players so maybe I won't have to look them up later on.
