March madness is almost over. The final four teams have been decided and we're stuck with, I mean they are: Duke, North Carolina, Kansas and Villanova. These matchups are pretty great in terms of brand power, but what should we expect to happen this weekend?
Duke and Carolina meet for the 3rd time this year, where both teams will try to stay within a 20-point spread, unlike their regular season matchups. Maybe this is because I'm not down south on Tobacco Road, but I don't feel the hate that this matchup should have. Actually, it feels like whenever I see coverage of the Carolina/Duke rivalry in the media it leans pretty one-sided with Duke being the more vocal side. Obviously with the way the rivalry is described the Heels hate the Blue Devils, but I'm just not exposed to as much from their end. I'm also imagining the Duke/Maryland rivalry of the early 2000s where things were extremely over the top during March. Maybe the actual game will make up for this, but the lead-up just feels kinda flat to me.
On the other side, Kansas and Villanova feels like it could be a forgone conclusion with the injury to Justin Moore. Nova was already paper thin when it came to depth, and this is going to make that problem even more apparent. But at the same time why would anyone bet against Jay Wright in order to bet on Bill Self? Jay Wright could coach circles around Self with his hands tied behind his back!
The tournament itself hasn't been anything fantastic, but it seems like we have a good finish lined up for us. I don't know what to expect because even the glaringly obvious feels like it could be in doubt. I don't know if I'm excited, indifferent, or somewhere in between. Either way, a least we have some big names to attract us to the screen on Saturday.
