Taylor Heinicke Scares Me

Another week, another Tuesday where I wake up not knowing how to feel about this edition of the Washington Football Team. Chase Young is out for the year, but was playing well below expectations prior to the injury. The defense was iffy at best but appears to be rounding into form recently. Our offensive players can't stop getting hurt. But nothing, and I mean nothing, is more anxiety inducing than Taylor Heinicke.

I should be happy that Heinicke is playing decently well, and that the Team is winning currently, but sometimes I just have to shut my eyes when this dude drops back. I mean, this happened last night:

More often than not, that type of play ends in disaster for the team, and it leads to another disappointing loss. Washington was lucky that they were playing the imploding Seahawks, who nearly pulled it out at the end. But back to Heinicke

The problem I have with him is that he's not playing bad football... he's just not anything special. He'll have his moments where he looks good, and immediately follow it up by throwing up a hospital ball where his receiver gets killed. FedEx field is already well known for being the place where ACL's and legs go to die, we don't need to actually see a person die on the field because of where he puts the ball.

On the other hand, he makes just enough plays that I can see the Team feeling confident sticking with him as a long-ish option. I mean, Ron Rivera has this obscure attachment to Kyle Allen, if he likes Heinicke on a personal level, whose to say he doesn't put up a fight for him to stay on the roster. If that happens, I fear Washington will essentially be in QB purgatory like they have been for the majority of my lifetime.

Please, Washington Football Team front office, for once, don't get overly enamored with the kinda shiny object in front of you. It's cubic zirconia, not diamond.
