It's no secret by now that I'm a fan of the Washington Football Team. However, I was not a fan that the organization's solution at Quarterback this offseason was Ryan freakin' Fitzpatrick. He's old, inconsistent, and there were better options out there for the taking like Sam Darnold.
Fitzpatrick got hurt during the Team's week 1 matchup against the LA Chargers, and he's now out for 6-8 weeks. Great....... now we have to spend half the season without the dude we pulled out of retirement as our alleged best option and we're back to the Taylor Heinicke experience.
I'm not a big fan of Heinicke, if he was meant to be a long term solution at QB, he would have already proved it at his previous stops in the league. That, or Ron Rivera would've gone forward with him as the starter from the jump. So what did he pay for? The answer: disappointment. Or, for lifelong WFT fans, we paid for more of the same. The only difference is that this time we thought we had something to look forward to.
The roster was the most loaded I've seen it besides the one good year we got in the RGIII era. Sure the O-line is still a work in progress, but we've got quality receivers, a stud running back in Antonio Gibson, a defensive line full of real life Monstars, and a quality secondary to back them up. The biggest question marks came at left tackle and quarterback. As important as the Tackle spot is, we all know QB is the season maker or breaker for a team.
I almost don't even want to address that Rivera said the team won't be making any trades or bringing anyone in to bolster the position. I don't want to throw the season away because I'm holding on to a sliver of hope that Heinicke is more of what we saw in the playoffs last year, compared to his previous stops. I just know that the logic side of my brain is telling me to stop being so naive. This is Washington, I know better. This franchise knows one thing, and one thing only: how to break my heart.
So, Dan Snyder and Ron Rivera, you guys got what you paid for, and me and the rest of the Team's fans have to suffer the consequences. Thanks guys.
