Let's not act like the Cowboys are still America's team, no matter how tonight's game goes. As I'm writing this, Dallas is up 7-0 only a few minutes into the game against the Eagles, but regardless of that, this franchise has been the same as a car with no spoiler: a lot of noise without much production.
Dallas used to by the name synonymous with the NFL, and to a degree, they still carry some weight, but they don't have the track record to back it up. Dak Prescott and company have been the definition of mediocre, finding ways to lose a bunch of games they shouldn't, and win ones, like Week 2 at the Chargers, where the other team did more to lose than they did to win.
Commercially speaking, the Cowboys are still the top, they bring in top dollar, and they always get the primetime slots. Tonight's game against the Eagles serving my point. Neither team is particularly great, the Eagles came into the season with no expectations, and the only reason they're in this time slot is the Dallas name. But, are they really the team worthy of so much attention? Am I writing about them because I know it can get clicks.... yeah maybe.
As an unapologetic Cowboy hater, it does drive me a little nuts that they are the team that gets the most publicity since they never live up to expectations. They're like the class clown where they get all the attention for being loud and acting out, but when it comes down to getting the job done, they never pass the class. Jerry Jones did a remarkable job building up the Dallas brand, but his dusty behind has one foot in the grave, and I don't see his son Stephen being able to do the same as dear ol' dad. Maybe that'll be the best thing for Dallas, be a little more lowkey and focus on winning on the field instead of the headlines.
Or just don't win at all, I'm cool with that too!
