The NFL has reinstated much-maligned wide receiver Josh Gordon today. This blog isn't about whether I think it's good for Gordon to try playing football again (I do, plus, no reason to not give him a chance, he hasn't committed any violent crimes, just really likes pot), but more to do with the Chiefs and their priorities. NFL officially reinstated WR Josh Gordon today, per sources.
And on the same day he was reinstated, he will sign with the Chiefs.https://t.co/WOU6n82qjo
Fresh off a game where their defense was shredded by the chargers like a knife through hot butter, I would have assumed the team's next move would be to add someone on the defensive side of the ball. It goes without saying that the Chiefs are solid on offense, and adding Gordon is a 0 risk, all gain type of play. Gordon won't be the kind of player he once was, it would be ridiculous to expect that. Maybe if he can be an Anquan Boldin-esque kind of player (he's got the strength to be one of those gritty, tough kind of receivers) it will really fit for him. But where's the defense?
The Chiefs could barely generate a pass-rush against the Chargers, recording only one sack on Justin Herbert and no interceptions. If they can't generate any kind of pressure then they won't be able to make opposing offenses sweat. Yes, the Chiefs offense is lethal, but they have shown to be more volatile than precision in years past. So it would make sense to have a defense that can create key stops, which they currently do not have.
I'm hoping for the best when it comes to Josh Gordon, I just wonder if Kansas City should've had different priorities for the time being.
