I know that I've made more than a few people upset with my blog posts and on Twitter dot com with my commentary about the new red (burgundy) scare in the DC area. I catch a lot of flack for saying that trying to separate support from the team away from support from Snyder is a delusional idea, and that I don't want the team to win, but I'm still a fan of them. To those people I say, "fair, but even if it's a little contradictory on the surface, my thoughts do make sense if you play the long game."
Yesterday was a case study in how too many fans choose to only see short-term positivity and ignore a more long-term based sensibility. Now, before everyone gets all up in arms with me, this is opinion based and I'm not here to make you feel better. With that said:
Oh man standards are LOW in the Capitol region. Redzone wasn't working for me (thanks and screw you, YouTube tv) so my only choice of games to watch was the Washington game. For the first time in a long time, I was all the way in on watching, albeit not by choice. I'll give the team this, they have playmakers, and Jahan Dotson looks like an absolute steal with how late the team got him in the 1st round. I was arguing we should have gone offensive line, and it seems like I was wrong, at least for now.
On the other hand, Carson Wentz is still making Wentzian type plays and it's going to kill this team. The Commies barely beat Jacksonville, a team with a QB that's essentially a rookie still because of how much of a waste his actual rookie season was. A team that has no history of winning since their early days of Tom Coughlin and Mark Brunell.
"Oh, you mean the same Jacksonville team that beat Buffalo last year?"
That argument would work if we weren't playing with two different sets of standards here. Buffalo went toe-to-toe with Kansas City in the divisional round last year, and Josh Allen is utterly electric. He's younger than Wentz, more mobile than Wentz and made his two mistakes in the 1st half of his game this week and then blew out the Rams. Wentz look good at moments yesterday, that is factual. However, he also showed that he is prone to the same backbreaking type of interceptions that have plagued his career. The only thing that saved him is Jacksonville out Jacksonvilled Wentz Wentzing.
I have a lot of concern about how he'll play over the course of the season because of these bad habits.
If this franchise wants to be taken seriously, they need to have clean wins against Jacksonville because they haven't earned any trust yet. If Buffalo drops a game against a team like the Jags, the public at large would be surprised, but unconcerned in the long run. The same people that I saw hailing Wentz as our new savior were mother fucking him a few minutes earlier after his last interception.
I get that Jacksonville players get paid too. I get that Doug Pederson is a super-bowl winning coach, but that franchise still has earned just as much trust as Wentz has, none. This win is not worth getting excited over. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying to be down on the team, but I came out feeling relief more than anything. This didn't feel like a good win, this didn't feel like a "take the next step" type of win.
This had the feeling of two mediocre teams without a winning culture playing and somebody had to win. I'm ok if fans feel relieved, I'm not on the same page with feeling a ton of excitement.
On the other hand, at least we didn't embarrass ourselves. Carolina took that crown this week.
