Two Duke basketball players were a part of a traffic stop with police last night. Michael Savarino was charged and arrested with DWI and Paolo Banchero was charged with Aiding & Abetting DWI. This is big not only because it is driving under the influence, which is ridiculously stupid, but Savarino is notably Coach K's grandson.
This is an embarrassment for the team, the University and for Coach K. It's bad enough that your grandchild was (allegedly) driving while intoxicated, but he is on the team too. So this coach, the man who has been viewed as the moral arbiter of college basketball can't even keep his own house in order. Literally and on campus.
I'm willing to bet that this could easily be boiled down to a college student being dumb, but it's different when you're a part of that family tree. You know the standard the media has set for your grandfather, either because you can't stop hearing about it, or Grandpa won't shut up about it. Either way, the standard is set higher because you're related to Coach K, thems the rules.
So Coach K, the guy everybody treats as some kind of demi-god above reproach has this happen in what is supposed to be his swan song season. This is a clear sign of institutional dysfunction and the easiest way to cut off the head of the snake before it slithers any further. A message needs to be delivered: we have these standards set by the media and by our own egos and we are going to abide by them.
So good riddance, be gone, no fanfare, no farewell tour, don't let the door hit you on the way out. Coach K needs to be gone.
