I have what will probably be an unpopular opinion as I'm watching the Falcons take on the Jets in London this morning. Early morning football is the absolute best, and it's making me wish I lived on the west coast to have it all the time.
What's better than waking up, moving straight to the couch, and popping the TV on to real time action? Seriously though, having a game on is way better than having pre-game talk shows on. When I get up in the morning I'm way too groggy and half awake to pay attention to the nuances of a talk-show conversation. It takes me some time to get out of the fog and into the flow of the day. Especially if I'm up late watching an absolute wild day of college football the night before.
That seems like a small detail, but it's really not. College football was absolutely on one yesterday, with games that were ranging from ridiculous to obscene from the start of the day all the way to the end. You had the number 1 team go down to a mediocre Texas A&M team, a game that put up over 100 points in Ole Miss v. Arkansas and a Red River Shootout for the ages. Those three games alone are enough to drain a normal person, then add the emotional swings of Wake Forest staying undefeated on the road in a wonky ACC, and Michigan in an absolute dog fight against Nebraska. I was worn out!
So when I woke up this morning, I wanted to just turn a game on, dive in and watch the action. I may not be suited to get into the nuances of a conversation, but I can understand when an awesome play is made, and enjoy and appreciate that. Maybe a talk show in between the 1PM EST and the 4:25PM EST games would be a good idea, but doing it first thing in the morning? My attention span just isn't there.
Now let's think about the night cap. I have to wake up at 5:30 during the week to get up for work, which is abnormal for most people, and I get that. However, I'm not writing this for the mass public, I'm writing this under the guise of self-interest. If the Sunday Night game started at around 5-5:30 PM like it does on the west coast, as a opposed to the 8:30ish start time on the East Coast, I could go to bed at a reasonable hour and not be dead at work the next day!
I know, first world problems, but take that argument and shove it, I don't care. Maybe I'm getting old and can't stay up late and recover as easily as I could in college. So what? If you start your day off hot with game time action, and then finish it off with a high-end evening not (not a night cap) how could you complain? You still get a full days worth of action, and you won't be in trouble with your bosses the next day.
If I could change Maryland's time zone to the Pacific time zone on weekends, I would absolutely do so.
