The Reality Show You Didn't Know You Needed

You ever find yourself needing a show to hate watch? Been struggling to find one recently? Well, let me introduce you to Netflix's Instant Hotel.

This show is the absolute worst, and best at the same time. We get to watch 5 pairs of Instant Hotel (think AirBnB if it's not already obvious) owners travel to each other's properties across Australia in order to review and rate them for a chance at a grand prize. So, sets up like a standard competition show, right? Well, at least that's the simplest part of the show.

Much like any other reality TV show, the people make the show. So far through season one I have seen 10 pairings of individuals. Three of whom have made me determine they deserve a swift kick to the head. Terry Brouwers, Shay Razaei and the worst of them all, Serena Dc are absolutely unbearable.... which is why I can't stop watching. I'm powerless, I know.

The first set of five pairs has four couples who frankly aren't too bad, and a half of one that is tolerable. And then there's Terry. Terry's partner, Brent, seems as if he's almost there just to tolerate Terry's shenanigans and not much more. He stays quiet while Terry goes around boasting about how he's "got a background in interior design" and how he's got the best instant hotel and its not even close.

Then you get to his place.

The house that Terry designed looked like somebody's grandmother took a bad pill and decided "let's put alllllll of the things up. Oh there's still a little bit of space? Let's put some more!" The house was disgusting, and when the other contestants let Terry know their criticisms he decided that everyone just "needed an education." I'm all for having personality and flare, but the level of arrogance and narcissism was vomit-inducing. I really hope he hasn't gained any form of celebrity for this in Australia. Dude deserves to be thrown in the trash with the rest of his decorations.

Now, I'll admit, I'm only two episodes into the second set of 5 pairs. That being said, two episodes is all I need. Shay and Serena came busting into the season with the same kind of disrespect the Kool-Aid Man shows any wall he walks near. At first, I thought Shay would be the real irritant of the season. She was bossy, arrogant and clearly spends too much time in front of a mirror. She and her instant hotel partner describe themselves as socialites and that, "everyone just really wants to be them." To me, that's an instant "Don't let the door hit you on the way out," type of attitude for me.

To her credit though, Shay comes around some at her second host site, a houseboat. She clearly wasn't a fan of the cramped sleeping quarters, but nobody really was so I give her a pass on that. What was the true surprise was when I heard her saying so many positive things about her stay, including the location, the experience with local amenities, and price point. So as crazy as she drove me in the first episode, Shay redeemed herself in the second.

Last, and certainly not least, Serena. I honestly wonder if this woman knows how to enjoy anything in life; well, anything that doesn't involve being in the "top 1% of reviewers on TripAdvisor."

Shut up, just shut your mouth. Nobody cares about that and the fact that you do is pathetic.

Serena goes around to every location and finds every little thing she can to nitpick on in order to bring down her competitors scores. Now, you could easily tell me that she's just playing the game, and I'd think that's fair. But in order to play the game you have to act with some level of decorum instead of demonstrably destroying every little thing you see... especially when it doesn't exist. That's right, in episode two she makes up a bunch of completely false problems with the house boat, and then proceeds to make her best effort at throwing the other residents under the bus by saying they were complaining. Thankfully, this didn't fly with anyone. I don't mind trying to play the game, you are in a competition after all, but she's not playing, she's just being a horrible person.

Serena's house is up next. Needless to say.....
