Fantasy Football: The Best and Worst Part of Fall

Fantasy football is a ton of fun for many people in this country. It's a chance for a group of friends, coworkers, family, etc to get together and put some extra skin on football action each Sunday (and Thursday and Monday). Most people tend to stick to one league mainly for the simplicity, but there are some psychos out there that choose to be in multiple leagues.

I am one of those psychos.

I love fantasy football, even if I do have a tendency to obsessively refresh my app to check on my score. I know it's only been five minutes, but I gotta know if my lead is secure! Or if I've made a comeback! Anything could happen with all the games taking place across the NFL, and that's what makes it so much fun.

You know what's not fun though? Having on player on your roster in one league be your opponent in the second league. A little extra background for you first though: my two league's are a bit unique in the modern age. The first league is run through the ESPN fantasy sports app, and is pretty much your standard fare. The other league however, was started in the late 80's and still has a lot of retro fantasy football aspects to it. Lineups are submitted through email each week, and scorecards are emailed out in a massive spreadsheet every Tuesday after all games for the week are completed. So there's no real way for me to keep track of my score in that league unless I feel like doing a ton of math while watching the games... and that's just not happening.

So this past week I had Kyler Murray as my starter in the retro league, as well as my opponent in the ESPN league. On a positive note, I also had DeAndre Hopkins in both leagues so some of what Murray did was an all around benefit for me. That said, it is absolutely gut wrenching to see him tossing touchdowns to anyone other than Hopkins, and even running one in for himself. I cannot tell you how many times I would scream out "YES!" to be immediately followed by "wait, crap, NNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" because of what Murray was doing.

How do I reconcile this? I seriously have no clue? Just close my eyes and hope for the best/worst? Do I hope a black hole opens up and sucks Murray into it until next week? Raid my liquor cabinet so my brain becomes a mental black hole? I really don't know. What I do know is that Murray was the catalyst for me picking up one win, as well as absolutely savaging me in the other league.

If only the ESPN league wasn't the league with the larger buy-in and ultimately grand prize.
