The 2021 (hack, 2020, hack) Olympics start this Friday, July 23rd. Japanese and Olympic officials have been busting their rears to get the Games going. They're doing the best they can to institute comprehensive and safe COVID protocols... even if some idiots still think the virus is a government fabrication. But all of their efforts will end up meaningless by the time this is all said and done.
The 2021 Olympics are a simple cash grab. Don't believe me? Follow for more evidence and try and tell me I'm wrong.
Alright so we can all agree that the COVID-19 pandemic is still a thing, right? We can't? Oh, right, this is America, we can't agree on anything. Oh well. Whether you agree that the virus is still wreaking havoc across the globe, the only opinions that matter are those of the citizens of Japan, the host of the 2020/21 games. So take your half-baked misinformed theories about the government creating a fear campaign and shove it up your arse Billy Bob, nobody cares what you think.
Now, for those who matter, the citizens of Japan. As early as May 18th, the New York Times was publishing articles stating that as many as 83% of Japanese citizens do not want the Olympic games to take place due to concerns over the Coronavirus and its Delta variant. Now, I don't care who you are, what your belief system is, or how high/low your IQ is. You should be smart enough to realize that if 83% of people are saying they don't want something, it probably shouldn't happen. I mean, I suck at math and I even know that much!
You need more evidence? Seriously? Alright, well you asked for it. As of July 19th at 8:28 Pacific Time, CNET posted an article listing some of the athletes that have tested positive for the virus both within and outside of the Olympic village. The list includes, but is not limited to, six members of Great Britain's whole team, two members of South Africa's soccer team, world renowned tennis player Coco Gauff, Bradley Beal and Jerami Grant of the US Men's Basketball team. The latter two didn't even get the chance to get to Japan before testing positive!
Feeling like this is a bit ridiculous yet?
So why are the Olympics still happening? Well, money of course. Because as well know, gravity doesn't make the world go round, but a social construct does! That's right, the International Olympic Committee is the definition of DJ Quik's line "Cause if it don't make dollars then it don't make sense." The are only a few things in this world I designate the brain space towards to say that I hate, and the IOC makes that list, standing right next to FIFA and the NCAA when it comes to sporting commissions.
Nobody at the IOC will come out and say this directly, so I should probably say that this is just my opinion in case I ever get known enough that the IOC wants to sue me for libel. With that out of the way, the organization clearly doesn't give a rats ass about the athletes who are grinding each and every day to reach the pinnacle of athletic accomplishments. Yes, they have the chance to reach ultimate glory on an international scale, but sometimes we as humans have to be protected form ourselves.
Yeah, I said it. Sometimes we're just too stupid to realize what's best for us. These athletes have been so hyper focused on their goal(s) of reaching the Games, that many would be willing to sacrifice their own health and safety in order to get there. Especially from countries that don't have the wealth of information that say the United States has available to them, misinformation can easily take over and rule the day. And the IOC simply doesn't care. They need the athletes to compete in order to make their money. Which... speaking of...
Toyota is pulling out of broadcasting ads on TV in Japan during the Games. TOYOTA. TOY. FREAKING. OTA. This is easily one of the biggest sponsors that the Olympic Games has because it's one of the most recognizable global brands. The IOC really needs to take this as a sign to cut bait and go back to the drawing board. If they were smart they would do everything they could to acquire vaccines in bulk and distribute them around the world and promoting COVID literacy so we can end this pandemic and that way they can get back to business as usual without these concerns.
There's still time to do the right thing. Do I expect the IOC to do it? Helllllllllllllllllllllll no. So the games will still go on, and a lot of people will still tune in. So for the athletes who have put themselves through hell in order to get to this stage, I ask one thing of you.
Don't be this guy.
