Get What You Came For: A review of Mortal Kombat

So I need to start with a disclaimer: I went into this movie hoping for one thing and one thing only. I didn't care about a well executed plot, or a whole lot of character development. I wanted awesome fight scenes.

And I got them.

My first rule of watching any movie based off a video game, or anime (Dragon Ball for example), I don't go in with high expectations. Chances are the movie is being used as a money grab off of the brand name and nothing more. Mortal Kombat is one of the few movies that exceeded expectations for no reason other than the choreography of the fight scenes.

Seriously, this movie would be total garbage without them. The whole time the characters are going off about a tournament to determine the fate of Earth... and it doesn't even happen. Instead, the evil guys try and take out the competition before the tournament can even happen. I WANTED A TOURNAMENT DAMNIT!

As a quick aside, the main character, Cole Young, is a total useless sack of crap through the whole movie. Dude was getting his butt kicked constantly, except for when the four armed monster trying to kill him and his family was distracted. I can't bring up one useful thing he did that would've contributed to the champions of Earth winning the Mortal Kombat tournament had it happened. Total. Liability.

That said...

Blood, gore, fatalities, oh my! One a scale of 1 - The Raid movies (go watch them if you haven't), I'd give these fights a 9. The directors spared no expense on making things as bloody and messy as possible to keep in line with how the video games are. This makes me very happy. Throw in a few corny references to the video game such as, "flawless victory" and "fatality" and the video game nerd in me was very pleased. Now, don't get me wrong, I think a couple of them were forced and could've been timed better, or said by a different character, but I'll take what I can get.

As a final note: shut the fuck up Kano. You'll know what I mean if you haven't watched the movie yet. Just... shut up dude. Please.

Rating: 2.5/5 Stars. While I didn't go in expecting much, I'm grading this on what I'd consider a semi-serious scale. So taking all of that into account I have to grade accordingly. The movie is a fun watch, you should know what you're getting into when you start it, and don't raise expectations ahead of time. No seriously, don't. if you're looking to relax, have a beer, put something action-packed and full of entertainment, this is the movie for you.

One final note: the writer's did the right thing by ending the movie with the original theme to Mortal Kombat. Well done guys.
